Sarah Palin's Facebook comments on the new health care proposal creating "Death Squads" (August 12th) was brought to my attention by my brother. Being fair minded, and rather independent when it comes to politics, I decided to check it out myself. What I read was shocking, but not in the sense the articles intended...
Basically, Sarah is slamming Section 1233, in particular the clause below, regarding our wishes for life saving measures and other health care directives. The fact is we will all, at some time, need to have our directives known and enforced. In short, Sarah seems to believethese measures which will insure out ability to make informed, sound decisions on our health will create "death squads" which will deny us the quality of care we deserve. All I can say is, "Sarah darlin', you need to read that again!
"Section 1233 authorizes advanced care planning consultations for senior citizens on Medicare every five years, and more often “if there is a significant change in the health condition of the individual ... or upon admission to a skilled nursing facility, a long-term care facility... or a hospice program." During those consultations, practitioners must explain “the continuum of end-of-life services and supports available, including palliative care and hospice,” and the government benefits available to pay for such services. "
I agree there should be safeguards to secure equal, quality care for all individuals, regardless of age or health condition. I also agree that there should be safeguards written in which guarantee that cost is not favored over the value of human lives. I must, however, take issue with the way this provision is being presented, and I will tell you why.
