If you are an experienced webmaster and you know your way around Joomla!, you may not need the sample data. If you are a novice, I highly recommend you install the data so you can learn your way around Joomla! prior to going live with your site.
The documentation can be daunting and confusing. The Sample Data gives you step by step instructions, as well as practical, on hands "training" to guide you while setting up your site. Once you have customized your site, you may decide to delete the sample data.
Secondly, your site may have nothing to do with web design. If you are selling natural cosmetics, sports equipment, books, clothing, etc., your readers probably won't be interested in Joomla! and there's no need for it. Additionally, if your web space or bandwidth is limited (you've got to be kidding me, you need a new host!), your sample data is useless and takes up valuable space and bandwidth.
If, however, you have unlimited space and bandwidth, Empowermom has a suggestion. Once you have your site customized for your uses, even if your content isn't centered around web design or content management, pass the benefits of Joomla! on to your viewers and your customers. Keep the sample data and integrate it into your site. You can edit any of the articles, delete some, or keep them all as is. It's your choice.
Since Joomla! is free and is supported by volunteers around the globe, you should help promote and support the program. As you learn new tips, tricks and codes which can help others, share the information on your site and in the Joomla! Forums. Aside from the benefits of keeping the system free for all users, it helps develop good community relationships and valuable partnerships for your own site.
